Gymnastics: Niwot’s Mia Curry continues state championship legacy

Enduring a disappointing all-around score on Friday night and yet still excited for her team’s second-place team finish, Niwot’s Mia Curry siezed the opportunity on Saturday to get back up on the beam and perform entirely for herself.

An electric effort that netted a score of 9.55 in Saturday’s Class 4A state championship individual finals kept Curry in the champions’ circle, as she won the event going away. In second was her teammate, Grayce Gutierrez, who scored a respectable 9.225.

The two-time 4A all-around champion added to her resume of individual finals, which in 2020 also included individual titles in bars and beam. Also on Saturday, Curry placed fifth in bars and 13th in vault.

Gutierrez’ beam finish was one of her best, and she also placed 10th in bars and 14th in floor exercise Saturday. Ava Silverstein (10th in beam) and Olivia Sroka (10th in floor) also represented NHS well with top-10 finishes.

The beam for local gymnasts on Broomfield and Mountain Range/Legacy also seemed to be a strong endeavor. Broomfield’s Kaya Duncan placed third in 5A with a 9.425, while Legacy student Kassie Chapman was fourth (9.275). BHS’ Maren Irvin was fifth.

Duncan and Sophia Pavlidis were 5-6 in 5A vault; Brenna Calvo was fourth in 5A bars (9.650); and Duncan was also fifth in floor.
